The Ospreys and Aspire2Be Education programme is an exciting and innovative education partnership between the two organisations.
Based on the principles of the Ospreys community focus, Aspire2Be developed a 21st Century digital education programme that instructs and develops teachers, from a variety of schools in the Ospreys region, to embrace new teaching skills and content, using digital technology at its heart. This newly gained knowledge is then taken back into the classroom to improve and enhance the education provision of thousands of youngsters in the Ospreys region.
The course is held over five sessions, where the teachers attend the Liberty Stadium for one half day a week over a five week period.
This allows teachers time to return to their schools, armed with their new skills that they are then able to deliver to their children, before returning the following week to gain more in the next phase of the course. This approach enables the teachers to gain confidence in their newly learned technology, before embarking on further instruction a week later.
The course is based on the following Five pillars:
- Literacy and Numeracy
- Health and Well Being
- Stadium Tour Preparation
- Science and Technology
- Coding and Programming
In depth instruction is given on the relevant applications that have been identified as most appropriate in improving learning in these five key areas.
All the apps that are introduced in the course are cross curricular and can be used in a variety of educational settings, but in terms of this programme, all content reflects the unique content the Ospreys can offer young children in putting the engagement and inspiration of sport at the heart of all the technology that is showcased and delivered during the training.
An exciting development of the programme has been to completely redevelop the Ospreys Stadium Tour experience, to deliver an innovative digital experience for the children, using iBeacon technology and the newly developed Ospreys app at the heart of the stadium experience. Children now complete work in a digital classroom on their tour, which allows them to access resources made during the tour when they are back in the classroom at school, enabling them to further develop their learning. Aspire2Be developed educational “stations” during the tour, and then created supplementary activities that teachers can use and develop back at school. This gives a crucial new learning dimension to the stadium tour, which – while losing none of the fun, engagement and inspiration of the tour for the children – adds in more educational rigour which will be of great benefit to the students.
In addition to the stadium tour, the students will experience visits to their schools by leading Ospreys players where they can experience what it is like to become a sports journalist, and also a visit to the Sony factory, where they will experience what it would be like to work in the technology industry. Two of the five sessions have been designed to introduce apps which will reflect the skills required to excel in both these diverse areas and will enhance and improve the children’s experience in both of these exciting environments.
In total, over 20 apps are covered with in depth tuition by our experienced trainers over the five sessions. Additionally, instruction is also given on the setting up of the Ospreys digital badge scheme, which can increase parental involvement in the scheme back at home.
This is truly a groundbreaking educational scheme, where the almost unique inspirational qualities of professional sport have been harnessed, for the first time, with digital technology to develop both educational opportunities in a traditional sense, but importantly, to also develop the digital competency of the students, in order to prepare them for the demands of the 21st Century technological age we are quickly moving towards.
