The timing of the iBeacon project for us with School Gym was perfect. We had just completed the physical development of School Gym, which had taken us several years. It is such an innovative concept, with a wide range of new bespoke equipment for children that we needed. Something to explain it all and bring to life the gym for the children. iBeacon does this literally in an instant.
It helps us to tell the story of School Gym and break it down into manageable zones to both pupils and visitors alike.
Educationally, it provides pictures/visual triggers for the pupils of the types of exercises/movements that they can do in each zone, and also highlights the correct and safe techniques.
Over time, iBeacon will allow both staff and students to add extra “layers” to this by enabling us to add our own lesson by lesson resources in the form of differentiated cards, exercise programmes etc. For the pupils, it will enable them to demonstrate exemplar work at key stage 3, and for key stage 4 students the use of iBeacon will act as an accreditation tool for their assignment based fitness centred work.
Thus enabling us to build up an engaging library of instant visual trigger resources, to stimulate the students, both cognitively and physically in lessons. For us, iBeacon has huge potential in helping break down School Gym into the Zonal Training Areas and thus help clarify and simplify to students this very important concept of functional movement.
IBeacon enables us to build/construct our “resources” in line with this concept, thus clarifying functional movement and visualising it to students, thus breaking the whole concept down into manageable “Bite Size” portions.
In doing so iBeacon makes the active learning of physical skill far more manageable for students, thus allowing them to achieve a far higher retention and engagement rate. Therefore the concepts go hand in hand, making School Gym and i-Beacon, the perfect fit. Having broken it down into these zonal areas/component parts and categories for ease of learning it is then easier to build it up into a complete functional training situation, i.e. put the jigsaw back together.
Finally, as School Gym develops its “pupil centric model.” I see –iBeacon becoming very much part of that and I will aim to ensure that i-Beacon becomes part of that integrated model and a big part of the solution that drives School Gym on a daily basis. Therefore, I see iBeacon becoming one of the “key drivers” in the day to day successful running of School Gym and thus the iBeacon badge will appear on all School Gym graphic boards going forward and thus will become an integrated part of the School Gym story and A2 Beacon will become a key brand icon with which all pupils accessing School Gyms across the country will instantly identify.
